Personal style isn't about chasing every single trend that's sent down the runway. It's about finding the ones that speak to you, and adding your own personal touch to each one to make them your own.
In the realm of fashion, I would say I am rather reserved in my personal style. I like to keep it simple, but do enjoy spicing it up every once in a while with pieces I would normally overlook. Today I wanted to bring light to the trends that have been speaking to me, and showcase some of my favourite pieces I've come across within those trends. As hard as it was, I managed to narrow it down to my top 5! Below are my five favourite trends for Summer 2016.
1) Monochromatic Outfits
Monochromatic dressing is arguably one of the easiest trends to be on top of this summer. How? Wear just one colour, my friends. As you can tell by the above pictures, I am currently loving the all white looks. Some of you may consider this a shock, as I am usually the one to be caught in all black on the daily. I do still love wearing black in the summer, but there is just something about all white that gets me. In terms of monochromatic outfits, I tend to stick to the neutral colours such as all white or all grey. With that being said, there's nothing saying you can't follow this trend in all red or all blue -- maybe i'll challenge myself to spice it up with some colour this summer!
2) The Necktie
I'll admit, when I first saw the neckties emerge in the late months of last summer and early fall, I wasn't quite sold. It can sometimes take me a while to warm up to certain trends, and this one is a perfect example. After a few months of meticulously planning how I would wear them, I am finally comfortable in my necktie game. I love wearing them with simple button down tops, and denim. I like how it adds interest to an outfit, while also being different than just your average necklace. I find myself wearing them loose around the neck most often, but have also worn my silk Babaton necktie nice and snug around the neck too; both were looks I enjoyed sporting.
3) The Jumpsuit
I, personally, am a huge fan of the jumpsuit. Working in the retail industry I have come to realize that not everyone loves them as much as I do. I can't tell you how many times I've seen women reach for what they thought was a dress, and turn away in disgust when they see it's actually a jumpsuit. I just don't get it! You get the polished look of a dress, but have the freedom to move as if you were wearing pants -- it's a win-win in my eyes! If you're like me and plan on rocking these all summer, a great website to check out is Revolve.com. There are tons of edgy and unique jumpsuits, both with short and long pants. Check it out!
4) Mules
What is a Mule you ask? It is any type of backless, often close-toed, shoe. They can be flat or have a heel, and are oh-so-trendy. I love my sandals in the summer, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't like to switch it up from time to time. These shoes are very easy to wear, and add a little formality to any casual spring or summer outfit. Who doesn't love a shoe that is both cute and easy to put on?
5) The Choker
My personal favourite accessory at the moment -- the choker. Although many of us would like to keep 90's fashion behind us, I'm more than happy to bring the choker along for 2016. These can be worn with virtually anything. A plain white T, a formal off the shoulder top, a bohemian dress... you get it. There are so many on the market right now that there is sure to be one that is both trendy, and unique to your personal style. Two places that I've have luck with choker shopping are Brandy Melville, and Nordstrom.com!
This brings my 5 Trends for Summer '16 post to a close. With the sun slowly starting to creep in more and more every day, I can't help but start to plan what sort of outfits I want to put together this summer. I hope this post inspired you to amp up your summer wardrobe, or if anything, provided you with a little bit of a distraction from the most un-liked season of all -- Finals season. I wish you good luck on both the studying, and the summer outfit scouting.
